Fall is just around the corner, and that means that cowl + hat season is drawing near! I’ve collabed with local Ontario indy-dyer Feisty Fibres to bring you this gorgeous knit Cable Cowl and Cable Hat set. I hope you love it as much as I do.

COLLABING WITH FEISTY FIBRES

I’m going to let you in on a big ol’ dirty secret - and don’t worry, Karen from Feisty Fibres already knows it… I am not a fan of hand-dyed yarn. OK OK OK, let me explain. I love all yarn. I love different colours, different weights, different dyers. But I think the reason why I hesitate when buying hand-dyed yarn… is because most of the time it color pools and it’s not solid. Inever know how it’s going to knit up compared to the skein, and I panic at the price. Backstory: I like to think of Knitatude’s style as solid, classic lines, and pieces that look like they were store-bought when they were really knit - and most of the time, I think that hand-dyed just doesn't always fit that mould.

I whispered these words out loud at VKL (Vogue Knit Live in New York) in January in front of Toni from TL Yarn Crafts, and she gasped in horror. Steph’s (from By.StephanieErin) head whipped around in shock, and Karen from Feisty Fibres marched right on over… I would like to say that’s when she decided to take on the challenge. Could she change my mind? Could she make me love yarn that’s not solid? Not tonal… and you guessed it; hand-dyed?

Chances are, you’ve already guessed the answer. And the answer is that she has SWAYED me. I’m not 100% convinced as I still love me a good ol’ solid, but my mind has been opened to other possibilities. And for that I am grateful.

THE HISTORY

When Karen and I first started talking about this collab, I told her in earnest that I was wary of color pooling in hand-dyed skeins. I liked to go with more tonal options because variegated (multi-colors in one skein) tends to be a bit too much for me. I also mentioned that I wasn’t a fan of bright colours - though most people and dyers think that I am because of my hair - but that I liked greys and more soft pastels. I laid it all out, and Karen came back. In turn, she showed me the most stunning tonal greys I have ever seen. Sweep (in both worsted and Suri) and “Seriously” with pinks/purple throughout are the ones she sent me (below). I couldn’t say no, and the rest is history.

STYLED AND DETAILS - THE FEISTY CABLE HAT AND FEISTY CABLE COWL SET

I originally wanted to use her Suri and the worsted double-stranded and at the same time, but when I knit them up together, I realized that I was losing the stitch definition of the cables. Her worsted has such good stitch definition in general, so Karen and I decided to leave the Suri out for a future collab/project, and instead just really highlight her worsted base this go-round. So without further adieu - I intro you to the Feisty Fibres matching Cable Cowl and Hat set.

Note: You can buy each pattern separately, or you can buy them together and use the coupon code: FEISTYSET to get 50% off of the second pattern.
